Built in 1870, as per the plans of an architectural firm named Hopkins & Willy, the 701, Côte de la Place D’Armes, important element of Montreal’s seeing, is now holding a 4 stars hotel, l’Hôtel Place D’Armes.

This building is a paragon of Lower Canada’s end of century elegance. The original five-story building was property of the insurance company Great Scotish Life Insurance who built it. In 1909, the building was prolonged to the "Ruelles des Fortifications" and was added two stories. The architect firm Marchand & Haskell, due to major changes, increased considerably the utilizable space without, in any way, compromising the delicate balance of the original architectural elements.

On November 7, 1975, conceived as an office block, the building was classified by the provincial government as historical. It was officially recognized for its exceptional design and execution, which undoubtedly contribute to the richness of Montreal’s heritage.

For thirty years, no appropriate vocation could be found to accentuate the singular beauty of this architectural jewel. Now that the building houses Hôtel Place D’Armes, it will relive its halcyon days of prestige and glory, contributing once more to the revitalization of a neighborhood that was, in fact, the corner stone of Montreal’s foundation and subsequent development.
