ANY SKIN CONCERNS? Defining Medical Aesthetics. (continued)

WRINKLES, sun spots, sun-damaged skin, rosacea, facial volume loss, loose skin, unwanted hair, scars, acne scars, stretch marks, spider veins, skin pigmentation; these are just some examples of concerns you may have that could motivate you to look for a medical aesthetics clinic with a skin expert.

IDEALLY, that means a dermatologist specializing in cosmetics as the delivery of skin rejuvenation and cosmetic enhancement requires training, experience, skill, a thorough understanding of the skin, its underlying structures and the capabilities & limitations of technology. The success of procedures is dependant on the provider of treatments and the technology used to carry out treatments.

THE first step to deciding whether or not you want to have your “concern” treated is to have a comprehensive consultation with a specialist dermatologist (there is almost always a fee which may or may not be deductable should you wish to proceed with treatment). During this time your skin condition or concern will be evaluated, options will be explained and treatments protocols outlined. Costs will be provided as well, of course. You should ask for truthful explanations as far as what result can be expected and how many treatments, on average, are required. Other very useful questions are: What are the risks? Who is the provider of this treatment? What are their qualifications? Do they have specialized training? How long have they been providing this service?

RESEARCH is vital. Research the doctor (if there is one!). What positions does the doctor currently hold? Is the doctor “affiliated” with the clinic or is he/she a pillar of the clinic?  Research the technology as well. All lasers were NOT created equal. It is important to understand what technology is being proposed by the provider and what the industry gold-standards are.

DECISION-making is the final step and the cost is ultimately a crucial factor for most people.  Remember, however, what is the use in spending money on make-up, creams, hair coloring, clothing & shoes if we don’t take care of our skin. Everything else is just camouflage.
